New York Times Skype Music Lessons
The New York Times I still remember the phone call I got back in January 2012 from a editor at the New York Times wanting to interview me for a article on webcam music lessons. I actually almost hung up on her and asked her to send me proof that she worked for them. The article linked and titled “With Enough Bandwidth, Many Join The Band” featured me and a guitar student in Seattle. The times actually sent a photographer to the students house to capture me on a flatscreen monitor and the student in a lesson as shown in this posts photo.I have been teaching guitar, bass and ukulele lessons online now for 4 years and business is getting better as more and more people realize private music lessons can be taken from their home or office. Not only can it be done it can be done better!
As a teacher I am focused on my students progress and I feel by the student being at home or in their office they are more relaxed and ready to learn compared to all the stress created by having to drive to a location for the lesson. Another huge advantage is I prepare the lesson material ahead of time, scan it and email it to the student. This allows the whole lesson time to be hands on demonstrating and comprehending the written lesson and making sure the student has a solid practice strategy for the week.
One other point that has been interesting is how comfortable younger students are learning online. I am accepting guitar, bass and ukulele students as young as 7 years old and they have no problem with the computer environment.Technology has made it very easy for people to connect around the world and the video chat programs, webcams and high speed internet have changed the way we learn. Feel free to contact me about scheduling or any tech questions you have. I am offering a free 30 minute lesson for guitar, bass or ukulele. Thanks, Jeff
